Today, I'm continuing my conversation with Dr. Andrew Schmutzer. If you haven't heard part 1 yet, I encourage you to go back and listen to it first. This is a conversation we all need to hear. With a statistic like one in six, sexual abuse may be the hidden story of your father, brother, son, or husband.

Dr. Schmutzer courageously addresses this issue, speaking directly to men about how they can begin the healing journey. And for those of us who want to support male survivors, he offers practical, compassionate advice.

We Discuss:

  • What men need for healing.

  • A male-oriented model of recovery.

  • Four stages of the healing journey.

  • How to support male survivors.

Andrew Schmutzer (PhD, Trinity International University) is a Professor of Biblical Studies at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Do You Need Support?
This powerful episode brings the Shame to Shining Series to a close. If you haven't downloaded the free Shame to Shining Guide I created for you, you can find it  here. It includes six steps to experience the transformation Jesus offers—moving us from wanting to hide in shame to boldly shining His grace and truth for others.

Naming Our Abuse

God’s Pathways to Healing for Male Sexual Abuse Survivors

Shame is not reserved for the sexually broken; it comes for all of us. Shame began in the garden and continues to whisper (and sometimes shout) lies to each of us:

  • Surely that can't be forgiven.

  • If others knew your secret struggles, you would be on the outside.

  • You've blown it, and there's no coming back.

  • Don't tell anyone that part of your story.

  • Shhhhh…

If you identify with these kinds of thoughts and are tired of letting them run your life, I would love to offer you a safe space and dedicated time to process your story—whatever it may be. As a coach, I will come alongside you, providing gentle guidance inviting you out of shame and into freedom!

(Sorry guys! I only coach women. But I can refer you to a great Christian counselor if you are looking for someone to walk alongside you.)
